May must be the busiest month in North Clare when it comes to festivals. There are so many happening right now, with the Burren in Bloom and the Burren Slow Food Festival probably being the best known ones. So this is a great time to visit the Burren and all the attractions it has to offer.
The Burren in Bloom Festival is running for the whole month of May focusing on the wonders of this unique limestone (karst) area. There will be walks and talks on the history of certain areas, or birds (chorus dawn walk!), or the wild flowers and everything else that makes this region so interesting.
Then, on the weekend of 23rd to 25th May, the Burren Slow Food Festival will take place in Lisdoonvarna. The overall theme this year will be SEAWEED, with tastings, talks and even foraging walks in the area. An illustrious line-up of speakers will explore the health properties of this valuable natural source of minerals, and there will be quite a few cookery demos to inspire the master chef in everybody in the audience. As the previous eight years, there will be an array of producers from the area on the farmers market, and a Burren Lamb Barbecue Banquet. Darina Allen will be the inspirational speaker this year.
