Tasty Burren - Foodie Town winner of 2015!

Foodie Town 2015 winner "What made The Burren stand out as exemplary was the comprehensiveness of their food offering from field – or in their case, fertile rock – through to fork. Food-loving tourists to The Burren are in for an intriguing treat." – Aoife Carrigy, Chairperson, IFWG*

Strictly speaking the Burren would not be considered a town, but that didn't deter the Restaurant Association of Ireland and the public to vote for the Burren as the best Food Destination in Ireland!

The Restaurants Association of Ireland are the organisers of the Foodie Towns competition. 2015 was the second year of this now annual event. Last year, Lisdoonvarna was entered by the Burren Ecotourism Network, and made it to the ten shortlisted destinations.

The award recognises those towns/areas which provide a unique food experience for  visitors and locals alike. The ultimate aim of Foodie Towns is to highlight efforts made by businesses in the areas to attract tourism by means of all kinds of food-related offerings and events, and to encourage a growing trend of food tourism in other areas across the country to develop in the same direction.

After a rigorous application process including visits to towns and areas, and almost 9,000 online votes, The Burren beat the competition and proved themselves to be an excellent leader as a foodie destination. From bustling farmers markets, food producers, food-related festivals to the Burren Food Trail, they set the benchmark for food tourism in Ireland.

"It was so encouraging to see the high standard of applications for this year's Foodie Towns competition – to reach the Top 10 alone was a real achievement for each of these destinations, given the competitive calibre. But what made The Burren stand out as exemplary was the comprehensiveness of their food offering from field – or in their case, fertile rock – through to fork. Food-loving tourists to The Burren are in for an intriguing treat." – Aoife Carrigy, Chairperson, IFWG*
