The first day of February is not only the beginning of spring in the Celtic world, but also St. Brigid's Day, or Lá Fhéile Bríde. You probably have seen crosses made from rushes on this day - they serve to protect homes from evil and harm.
Birgitta followed an invitation to a celebration of St. Brigid and other successful and strong women at the Irish Embassy in London. President Michael D. Higgins speech was followed by talks relating to influential women about for example author Maeve Binchy and of course St. Brigid, and also talks given by designer Orla Kiely and actress Pauline McLynn (Mrs Doyle from the hilarious TV series Father Ted).
One wonderful aspect of this celebration was that all canapes served at the event were supplied by companies that are either inspired, co-owned or owned by females. We were honoured to see our Burren Smoked Irish Organic Salmon served as fingerfood there.
