Our team consists of quite a few people these days. Our core staff would be around 15 people. This number gets considerably higher in summer when the shop and the production area will be busy, and of course during the pre-Christmas season.
All our team members live locally within a radius of a few miles from the Burren Smokehouse. We are quite an Irish and international team - we come from Ireland, England, Sweden and Germany.
The Managers/Owners - Birgitta Hedin Curtin and Peter Curtin
Birgitta and her husband Peter started to smoke salmon in 1987, and built the premises of the Smokehouse in 1989.
Born in Nyköping on Sweden's Baltic Sea coast, Birgitta studied Science at Lund’s University with special studies in Marine Algae. She is involved in all aspects of the business, with strong ties to marketing and sales, the Visitors centre, and the on-going development of the website.
Birgitta has a passion for good, organic and artisan foods, and manages to juggle her work and her family of four at the same time.
Peter built the smokehouse in 1989 and the visitor centre in 1995 along with his wife Birgitta, director of the Smokehouse. Peter is always working on new and innovative ways to assist in the product development of the Burren Smokehouse and the Roadside Tavern. His latest venture is brewing three kinds of beer in the Burren Brewery.
The Smokers: Peadar Reilly and Stephen Wall
Peadar was born in Dublin and moved to County Clare quite a few years ago. He loves traditional Irish music, and he plays and teaches tin whistle and flute. He recorded a few CDs with traditional Irish music.
Stephen, also from Dublin, joined the team in 2013 and has proven an asset ever since, learning the new skills needed in no time.
Our production team
These highly efficient and well-trained people are the core of our production. This team which would considerably increase in numbers in the run-up to Christmas. They would trim the fillets, slice them and package them to customers' orders. Noel is responsible for the packing and wrapping of orders and for delegating the different daily tasks that need doing. Helen is our quality control manager and works closely with the smoking and the productions teams.
Our office team
Karin is concerned with export to businesses and private customers, maintains and updates the website and the Facebook page, and sends out the newsletter. Tracey is usually the one answering the phone to take orders or help with general inquiries. She also takes care of group bookings for the Burren Smokehouse visitor centre and the Roadside Tavern. Teresa is responsible for the accountancy side of the business. Noel is our reliable van driver who supplies the shops and catering businesses between Galway and Limerick with our products.
Visitor Centre team
Orla works in the shop either over the summer or on weekends when she is not studying. Mike provides a great experience for our visitors in the shop and explains everything they want to know which covers virtually every topic under the sun.
