Now in its tenth year, the Green Awards 2018 gala ceremony celebrated the achievements of environmentally minded businesses and organisations in Ireland.
The Burren Smokehouse was first shortlisted and then announced the winner of the Green Seafood Business Award category!
The team of the Burren Smokehouse is very proud to see all the hard work being recognised, and it is a great incentive to do even more on that front.
Our website and blog are among the Top 100 of such digital publications on the internet! The choice was made by Feedspot.
The Best Seafood blogs were being chosen among thousands of top Seafood blogs by means of an index using search and social metrics.
These blogs are selected based on criteria like the ranking and reputation on Google, their influence and popularity on Facebook and other social media sites, on the quality and consistency of blog posts, and of course on Feedspot’s editorial team and expert review.
Our Burren Hot Smoked Irish Organic Salmon with Honey, Lemon & Pepper with its very unique marinade only used by the Burren Smokehouse was awarded a 2-star Gold Medal!
These are the different notes from the blind tasting process which can take quite a long time and many hours and people to fulfill:
"A lovely looking fish with lots of black pepper evident. The fish is wonderfully moist and meaty. The balance of smoking and flavour is just right in this product allowing the fish flavour to come through.
A good looking piece of salmon. There are some good flavours here, a light smoke not overpowering. The pepper comes through and the seasoning is ok. A good smoked fish lingers on the finish.
A handsome side of salmon, the outside burnished and with good big flakes of fish inside and a lovely delicate aroma. The delicacy carries through to the fish, and then to a lingering taste. We especially liked the moistness and freshness, plus the restrained level of smoking."
The Burren Smokehouse was one of the winners of the "Marine Industry Awards" that were celebrated in early July 2017.
Birgitta Hedin Curtin, owner-manager of the Burren Smokehouse, accepted the distinction of the "Seafood Sustainability Awards" category on behalf of the whole Burren Smokehouse team.
She said, "We are thrilled & honoured to receive this acknowledgement of team effort to embrace sustainability practices."
We are honoured to have received the Georgina Campbell's Irish Breakfast Awards 2017.
Our Burren Smoked Irish Organic Salmon was named the Best Irish Breakfast Food in the "Fish" category!

We are very happy to report that Birgitta Curtin of Burren Smokehouse has won the "Good Food Ireland Food Champion - Best of the Decade Award".
The award honours a person who has worked to drive and influence the Irish food scene within the last ten years. A passionate and committed individual, who through their work in growing, farming, producing or cooking with Irish food, has also made an outstanding contribution to raising the profile of Ireland as a top quality destination for discerning food lovers.
But it didn't stop there. She also was recognised to be an "International Ambassador of the Decade"!
The International Ambassador of the Decade Award highlights an individual or group who has joined Good Food Ireland in volunteering to promote Irish food at home and abroad. This award highlights efforts which have gone beyond the call of duty, to help gain recognition for Ireland as a first class culinary destination.
These are the honourees being awarded on the night as INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADORS OF THE DECADE – sponsored by EPIC Ireland.

We were shortlisted among the 11 Best Food and Drink Shops in Ireland!
Eleven shops were shortlisted in that category, and among them was the Burren Smokehouse Visitor Centre!
The Irish Times ran a campaign enlisting the help of their readers to discover the most interesting shops, salons and cafés across the country.
Now in its fifth year, the Irish Times Best Shops in Ireland awards, backed by AIB, seek to reward independent shop owners who are getting it right according to their customers.
A baffling 30,000 entries from the public were flooding into the newspaper, and the seven judges had their hands full selecting the best ones.

Burren Hot Smoked Irish Organic Salmon with Highbank Orchard Apple Syrup & Dill - 2-star Gold Medal
Burren Peat and Oak Hot Smoked Irish Organic Salmon - 1-star Gold Medal
The first one almost got a 3-star gold medal, if the tasting notes are anything to go by. These are the tasting notes:
"Well done for not overdoing the smoking, a pleasant moist texture, beautifully fresh dill, a very stunning presentation. There is a sweet note to start with, the dill is good, the salmon is moist and much sweeter and juicier at the belly of the fish. A rich moist fish, dense flesh with wonderful aroma of fresh dill and sweetness from the syrup. The flavour is lovely. The moist flesh is complemented by the ingredients, with the salt delivering what it should without overpowering. The freshness of the dill is really good. We were almost there for 3 stars, but not quite...."
In September 2015, we received the "Product of the Show" award at the Speciality & Fine Food Fair in London for our Burren Smoked Irish Organic Salmon with Seaweed.
We were very pleased to be winners of the Smoked Fish category at the recent Irish Quality Food Awards in Dublin for our Burren Hot Smoked Irish Organic Salmon with Honey, Lemon & Dill.
The award highlights the importance of two things which are core to our business: Using the best raw materials possible, and applying the traditional, artisan way of smoking just pays off!
Irish Food Writers' Guild Awards 2015
We have won many awards through the years, and almost all of them were for the quality of our products. But this time, Birgitta Hedin Curtin, the owner-manager of the Burren Smokehouse, won an award for her personal efforts for the food industry.
On 4th March 2015, in the stylish setting of the Michelin-star restaurant L'ECRIVAIN in Dublin, Birgitta was identified to have brought great achievements to the food industry in Ireland. The official title is Award for Notable contribution to Irish Food during the year.
As they write on their website, "The Irish Food Writers' Guild was formed in 1990 to promote high professional standards of knowledge and practice among writers about food, nutrition, food history and other allied matters and to assist in the forging of links and networks between professionals in the food industry."
Food provenance and authenticity were top of the agenda at this year’s Irish Food Writers’ Guild Food Awards, as seven food producers were presented with a 2015 Award.
Now in its 21st year, the Irish Food Writers’ Guild (IFWG) Food Awards recognise and reward producers of the highest quality food together with industry stalwarts who devote their lives to supporting and promoting Irish food. What’s unusual is that no one can enter themselves into these awards. Which makes being given this award all the more special!

We won the "Best Fresh Fish Award" with our Burren Smoked Irish Organic Salmon with Seaweed!
The Irish Quality Food and Drinks Awards are open to all Irish retailers, food producers, wholesalers, and food service operators in both the North and South of the island of Ireland. The awards draw on the heritage and expertise built up over 30 years by the UK Quality Food & Drink Awards, now a consumer-recognised brand.
The judging took place over two weeks in July 2014 at The Dublin Institute of Technology’s School of Culinary Arts and Food Technology.
Every product was evaluated by at least 10 highly experienced judges so the feedback that each producter received has been incredibly useful. Winning means that we have independent confirmation that we have an outstanding product and have been found to be the best of the best.
This year's results are out, and again like in previous years, our different kinds of Burren Smoked Irish Organic Salmon have netted quite a few medals!
We received four medals for our different marinades and smoked salmon varieties.
Our Classic Burren Smoked Irish Organic Salmon (cold smoked) won a 2 Goldstar Medal!
Of the almost 10,000 products submitted, only 125 achieved the 3-stars status. So you can imagine that we were very happy about that. We thought it could not get any better than this, but we were wrong!As we learnt at the gala dinner on 9 September 2014, our Burren cold Smoked Irish Organic Salmon with Seaweed took the biscuit, excuse the pun. It made it into the TOP 50 FOODS selected by the judges of the Great Taste Awards 2013. It was this same salmon that was served to the guests of the gala dinner.
Bruce Langlands, Director of Food at Harrods in London, gave this new salmon creation of ours this raving video review. He said, “This is the most fantastic smoked salmon that I have ever tasted. It comes from the Burren Smokehouse and is produced by probably one of the biggest fishy foodies I know in Ireland called Birgitta, and her team.” He goes on to say that it is beautifully smoked with delicate smoke flavours. And he also mentions that we served it to the Queen.
Not only did we serve our Burren Smoked Irish Salmon to the Queen of England, but we also created four winners at the Great Taste Awards 2013!
Out of almost 10,000 products entered into Great Taste Awards 2013 just 125 have been awarded 3-star Gold Medals. AND THREE OF THEM COME FROM THE BURREN SMOKEHOUSE!

The different stages of the tastings took a long time, several months even. This does not come as a surprise considering that there were almost 10,000 food products that needed to be tasted and re-tasted. It is the world’s largest and most rigorous food awards scheme involving over 400 judges and thousands of hours of blind tasting. The clue is in the name – “Great Taste Awards” are simply about taste, not clever branding or smart packaging. Judges are presented with, for example, a piece of cheese, a pie or a little dish of chutney, with no wrappings, jars or marks. And they taste, confer and re-taste before making the decision on whether a product should be a 1-, 2- or 3-star winner. In total, more than 12 judges will have tasted and commented on each product.
Birgitta Hedin Curtin, owner-manager of the Burren Smokehouse, is delighted: “Apart from been given the honour to supply our Burren Smoked Irish Wild Salmon for the Irish State Dinner for Queen Elizabeth II at her historical visit to Ireland in May 2011, this is the sweetest success of our company’s 24 year history”.
Out of almost 10,000 products entered into Great Taste 2013, just 125 have been awarded 3-stars. All 3-star products have been re-judged by a panel including “Masterchef” judge and restaurant critic Charles Champion, food buyers from Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Whole Food Markets as well as Michelin Star chef Russell Brown.
Our Burren Hot Smoked Organic Salmon (unspiced) has won a 2-star Gold Medal at the Great Taste Awards 2013!
There were almost 10,000 food products submitted for the GTA 2013, so we are really excited about this medal!

On the 13 September 2012, the winner in the different organic categories was announced, and we are very happy to let you know that the Burren Smokehouse was the winner of the “Best Organic Prepared Food” category with the Burren Smoked Irish Organic (cold) Smoked Salmon.

The Burren Smokehouse was awarded another gold medal at the Great Taste Awards for our Organic Smoked Salmon with a marinade of Limoncello (lemon liqueur).

Bord Bía - Best Organic Retail Product 2010
The Burren Smokehouse "has been highly commended in the Best Organic Retail Product award category in the National Organic Awards 2010 with their entry Burren Smoked Organic Salmon 100g". This is like a Silver Medal, and we are very proud of it!
Three of our four entries were awarded 2* Gold Medals! Not just any gold medals, but those with two stars! We are absolutely thrilled to see the reward for our never-ending efforts to maintain and if possible improve the high standard of the quality of our products, and to create new mouth-watering varieties.
These are the products that won the Great Taste 2010 2* Gold Medals:
- Irish Hot Smoked Organic Salmon with Honey, Lemon & Dill
- Irish Cold Smoked Organic Salmon with Honey, Whiskey & Fennel
- Cold Smoked Halibut
Considering that there were over 6,000 entries, and that only 457 products were awarded a 2* Gold Medal, this is definitely no mean feat!
Seafood Exporter Award for Burren Smokehouse
After receiving awards after awards for the quality of our products, the Burren Smokehouse has been awarded for the service offered to our customers. The Seafood Exporter Award 2009, sponsored by Bord Biá, recognises companies in the seafood sector that have made significant progress in securing and building export markets for Irish seafood. The winner was Burren Smokehouse for its success in exporting 60% of its smoked organic and premium salmon, trout and mackerel to the USA, Europe and Japan. Birgitta received the award from Taoiseach Brian Cowen, Ireland's prime minister (photo).
This award is a great milestone for us as it means that our efforts to reach customers in other countries - through innovation, customer-orientation and not the least a fully translated trilingual website and newsletter - are acknowledged.
After the "Producer of the Year" Award received in September 2009, we received another award in October 2009: a gold medal in the fish category of the Blas na hEireann, the Irish food equivalent of the "Olympics" so to speak. The Blas na hÉireann Awards are the only Irish food awards that focus solely on taste, arguably the most important criteria for a food product, and the judging process, developed and overseen by the UCC Food Science Department is the most rigorous in the country.
Producer of the Year" Award 2009
In September 2009, the Burren Smokehouse was voted "Producer of the Year" at the prestigious K Club in Straffan (home to the 2006 Ryder Cup). This fantastic event was held by Good Food Ireland in conjunction with Bord Bía.
We have done it again - and not only one award this time, no three! At the SHOP 2008 show in Dublin, our latest innovation, the Burren Cold Smoked Organic Salmon with Honey-Glazing, Whiskey and Fennel (oh yes, it is tasty!) won awards for- the Best Chilled/Frozen Product
- the Best Irish Product, and
- the Best Overall Product of the Show!
Great Taste Awards 2008 - 2 Gold Medals for the Burren Smokehouse!
We are very proud to announce that the Burren Smokehouse won - again - two gold medals in the British Great Taste Awards: one for the Premium Farmed "Salmon of Knowledge" (cold smoked), and one for the Hot smoked Organic Salmon with Honey and Dill. Just to give you a perspective: Over 160 experts in five locations were involved in more than 24 days of assessing and tasting. Almost 4,800 products from 2,021 small food producers were judged in this year's awards - so our achievement is no mean feat!
SHOP 2007 - BEST IRISH PRODUCT OF THE SHOW
In 2007, we did it again! We won the BEST IRISH PRODUCT OF THE SHOW award of SHOP 2007, Ireland's Retail Food & Drink Event in September in Dublin. This great success was achieved by an innovative product that has a lot of health benefits: our new Honey, Lemon & Pepper Hot Smoked Organic Irish Salmon.
SHOP is Ireland's Food and Drink Event.
Again, like in the previous years without exception, the Burren Smokehouse received the Bridgestone Award 2007.
The Burren Smokehouse has been given a very prestigious award: the Irish SHOP Award 2006 for the Best Irish Food/Beverage Product.
Our newly launched combination pack of cold smoked and hot smoked spiced organic salmon impressed the jury so much that they nominated it best retail product of the year 2006.
The Burren Smokehouse are delighted to announce that we have won the Gold Award from the prestigious "Great Taste Awards" in London in 2003 and in 2005 sponsored by Fortnum and Mason.
Our Smoked Irish Atlantic Salmon won the Gold Award in 2005 after winning the Silver Award already in 2003. Our Hot Smoked Organic Salmon won the Bronze Award in 2005.
